Create A Guillotine League with Yahoo Fantasy Football: During The Season

When we posted our first article about creating a guillotine league with Yahoo Fantasy Sports, we weren't sure it was going to work. Honestly, we had no idea, which is why our league ended up being free to enter for this year. Now that the season has begun, we're confident that we can make the guillotine league happen. Here's how to manage the teams once the season has begun.

Determine Who Gets Cut

Head to the league homepage (click league in the main menu) and take a look at the scoreboard. If you've set it up by points, there will be no head to head, just a ranking of 1st to last place. This makes it extremely easy to determine who gets chopped. Find the lowest score (do this on a Tuesday), and advance to the next step.

Freezing A Team

As commissioner you'll be required to do all of the dropping yourself (outlined below), but once you do that you have to make sure the team is unable to participate any further. Otherwise they'll screw up the waiver wire and it'll just be a mess. Go to the Commissioner link and then to "Manage Other Teams". Behold the power that you have.

From this screen, click on Lock Teams. As the image below will show, you have a lot of little checkboxes to click on. Hone in on the team that's getting cut for the week, and check all of the boxes except for "Message Boards/Posting", "Email League" and "Team Name" if you're feeling generous. Be sure to hit submit once you've checked the boxes.

Placing Players On The Waiver Wire

Now that you've locked down the team that's getting removed, head back to the commissioner page and Manage Other Teams. Just below "Lock Teams" you'll see "Edit Rosters". Click that link. You will now see the option to select a team (the team getting cut) and what to do with their roster. Focus on "Drop Player" as that's the main ingredient for the Guillotine League to work. Look with your special eyes at the Drop Player screen. Check allllll the boxes, hit submit and watch the cut person cry. As with the other pages, make sure to hit "Submit".

Nicely done, double-check the waiver wire to make sure the players have appeared, kick back and prepare for the whining. Each week, do this to the lowest scoring team for the week. It's a cutthroat system, but so far it's quite a bit of fun. No one is safe!

Other Thoughts

Make the cuts a spectacle. Host a weekly ritual where your entire league hops on a video chat to watch the insanity unfold. Post it on YouTube. Many options as to how to make it an enjoyable weekly ceremony.

Double-check everything. Last thing you want to do is create extra work for yourself, so before you hit that submit button, be sure everything you've done is correct and you didn't accidentally choose the wrong team.
