WHAT YOU NEED: an A4 sheet of paper, whiteboard, ruler, compass, coloured pens and calculator.
2 of 9
STEP 1: Make a note of all the actual measurements on a football pitch in metres.
3 of 9
STEP 2: Write out the problem and label the key pieces of information, 105 metres and 1 m: 2 mm. Draw a bar and label it 105 metres. Draw a bar underneath and label it with a question mark...
4 of 9
...estimate where 1 metre lies on the top bar, draw a vertical line here and label it as 1 m. Draw a line underneath and label this 2 mm.

STEP 3: Write the equation out: 105 multiplied by 2 mm. Before you use a calculator, can you estimate the answer?
6 of 9
Use a calculator to check your answer. Here it is 210 mm.

STEP 4: You have found that 105 m scales down to 210 mm when the pitch's measurements are marked at a ratio of 1 m: 2 mm. Now you know the method, use it to find out the other measurements in mm and note them down. You're now ready to draw the pitch.

Using a ruler and compass carefully draw the scaled down lengths on a piece of paper. Well done! You now have a scale drawing of a football pitch. What if you wanted to draw it larger on an A3 piece of paper? Can you imagine how you would do it?
